2 & 4 Sam Leong Road Shophouse Conservation

The conservation of 2 & 4 Sam Leong Road involved the restoration of two pre-war shophouses, addressing structural and aesthetic challenges caused by MRT tunneling-related ground settlement. This project preserved the buildings’ heritage character while ensuring their structural integrity and safety.

Scope of Work – Structural Restoration of Pre-War Shophouses

Structural Assessment and Repairs

  • Conducted surveys to evaluate critical structural instabilities caused by nearby MRT tunneling.
  • Identified and repaired cracks in party walls, some exceeding 10-20mm wide, ensuring stability.
  • Addressed damage from perpetual roof gutter leaks, which compromised the integrity of the structure.
  • Installed structural strutting from the 1st storey level, under close supervision from engineers and the RTO.

Flooring Restoration

  • Removed and disposed of termite-infested timber floorboards to prevent further deterioration.
  • Replaced damaged flooring with high-quality teak, maintaining structural durability and heritage authenticity.

Facade and Window Restoration

  • Replaced deteriorated Chengai facade windows with French-style Chengai windows featuring stained glass panels.
  • Restored plaster cornices, columns, and moldings, preserving the original architectural character.

Heritage Conservation

  • Focused on retaining historical authenticity by using traditional materials like Chengai wood and stained glass.
  • Ensured all restoration work aligns with heritage preservation standards, maintaining the visual and structural integrity of the shophouses.

This project required meticulous supervision and safety measures, ensuring that the restored pre-war shophouses remain structurally sound, historically accurate, and visually captivating for future generations.
